Hello OpenELIS Community,
My names are Lemeri Gift Festus, and I am excited to apply for Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2025 with OpenELIS. My focus is on the “Add Support for Multiple Translation Languages via Transifex” project, which aims to enhance the accessibility and usability of OpenELIS by supporting multiple languages.
Recently, I have been exploring the capabilities of Transifex and how it can be integrated into OpenELIS to streamline the translation process. I have also sharpened my understanding of how to integrate transifex into OpenElis by having interactions with developers who use transifex
Project Vision
Currently, OpenELIS supports only English and French. This project aims to expand language support to include multiple languages, starting with Spanish as a use case. By using Transifex, we can automate the translation process, making it easier to manage and update translations.
My Approach
1. Integrating Transifex:
- Objective: Integrate Transifex with OpenELIS to manage translations.
- Action Plan: Set up Transifex for OpenELIS, configure the project for multiple languages, and automate the translation workflow.
2. Expanding Language Support:
- Objective: Add support for additional languages, starting with Spanish.
- Action Plan: Use Spanish as a pilot language to test the integration, then expand to other languages based on community needs.
3. Translating UI Messages:
- Objective: Ensure that all UI messages are translatable and properly localized in the project.
- Action Plan: Identify all UI messages, create translation keys, and use Transifex to manage translations.
4. Automating the Translation Process:
- Objective: Automate the process of updating and managing translations.
- Action Plan: Implement scripts and workflows to sync translations between Transifex and OpenELIS, ensuring that updates are reflected in real-time.
Seeking Community Insights
To make this project a success, I need your insights:
- Which languages should we prioritize after Spanish?
- Are there specific challenges you’ve faced with the current language support?
- Any suggestions for improving the translation and localization process?
Why This Matters
Expanding language support in OpenELIS will make the platform more accessible to non-English and non-French speaking users, enhancing its usability and adoption in various regions. This project is an opportunity to make OpenELIS truly global, supporting healthcare providers and patients worldwide.
Let’s Connect
I’m eager to collaborate with you all, learn from your experiences, and contribute to this impactful project. Your feedback and guidance will be of great value.
Thank you for your time and support.
Best regards,
Lemeri Gift Festus
