New to OpenELIS & Interested in Contributing

Hello OpenELIS Community

My name is Tresor Ishimwe Bertrand, a software developer based in Kigali, Rwanda. I’m new to the OpenELIS community and excited to start learning and contributing to the project.

I recently discovered OpenELIS Global while exploring open-source tools used in healthcare and public health systems, and I’m very interested in understanding how the platform works and how I can support the community over time.

My Background

I have a general background in:

  • Web application development

  • Open-source collaboration (GitHub workflows, PRs, reviews)

  • Basic application security concepts (OWASP Top 10 awareness)

  • CI/CD and automated testing fundamentals

I’m still learning OpenELIS specifically and haven’t contributed yet, but I’m motivated to start small, follow community standards, and grow through mentorship and collaboration.

Areas I’m Interested in Learning About

  • OpenELIS Global architecture and data flows

  • How contributors usually get started (good first issues, setup guides)

  • Testing, documentation, and code quality improvements

How I’d Like to Start

I’d appreciate guidance on:

  • Recommended issues for first-time contributors

  • Local development setup tips

  • Contribution expectations and review process

I’m here to learn, help where I can, and contribute responsibly over time.

Thank you

Hello OpenELIS community,

My name is Deborah Nakamatte, a software developer based in Uganda. I’ve been following the work being done here at OpenELIS and would love to start contributing to the project.

I have a strong background in Java and JavaScript, specifically working with frameworks like React and Spring Boot. Much of my recent work has been within the OpenMRS ecosystem—handling everything from backend Hibernate migrations to frontend ESM module development. Given the close relationship between EMRs and LIS, I’m excited to apply my experience to the laboratory side of health informatics while continuing to grow my skills within this community.

I’m currently familiarizing myself with the codebase while looking for “good first issues.”

Looking forward to working with you all!
